Lumi-Barrier packaging for highly light-sensitive medicines

Packaging solutions

Körber presents innovative packaging solutions at Pharmapack

Focus on product safety, sustainability, and intelligent packaging concepts

Allschwil (Switzerland), 19 January 2026 – From 21-22 January, Körber will be presenting its latest secondary packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical industry at Pharmapack in Paris (Booth 4A80). The main highlight will be the new Lumi-Barrier packaging for light-sensitive medicines. The comprehensive packaging solutions are specially tailored to the rigorous requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. In this context, the focus will be on innovative secondary packaging, leaflets and labels for highly sensitive medicines.

Jointly with the specialist for pharmaceutical packaging accessories, Wilhelm Bähren GmbH & Co., acquired in 2024, Körber will be demonstrating an integrated approach at the trade fair, spanning from a digitalised, smart production to innovative packaging for safe onward transport. This holistic approach enables pharmaceutical manufacturing companies to maximise the safety, efficiency and sustainability of their products – from manufacturing to the end consumer.

Light barrier for protecting pharmaceuticals

A highlight of Körber’s trade fair participation will be the Lumi-Barrier packaging – a newly developed folding box for highly light-sensitive medicines. Thanks to a special black inner coating, the carton-based packaging offers significantly better light protection compared to uncoated, white carton. Studies tested at the Fraunhofer Institute confirm up to ten times lower light transmission in this context, depending on the wavelength examined. In the visible spectrum from 380–780 nanometres, the absorption values of the black coating were, on average, more than 1.5 times as high as those of the uncoated, white material.

The aim of this development is to create greater product safety and stability for the companies applying it, thereby addressing a key challenge in the manufacture of sensitive pharmaceutical products. Even the transmission of small amounts of light can have far-reaching effects in this context.

Application-oriented development

This application-oriented development philosophy was recognised with the Swiss Packaging Award by the Swiss Packaging Institute (SVI) in 2025. In the Daily Dose Stick Pack category, the competing product convinced the jury with its patient-friendly design, which is oriented towards the progress of medication intake.

"The variety of complex challenges in pharmaceutical and biotechnological production requires well-thought-out end-to-end solutions. Our focus is on leveraging our packaging to support counterfeit protection and to make the use of medication at home as user-friendly as possible – all while adhering to strict sustainability standards," explains Rob Jones, Head of Packaging Development Materials at Körber. "At the same time, we develop tailor-made, compliant manufacturing conditions in close cooperation with our customers."

Visitors and press representatives are cordially invited to visit Booth 4A80 in order to find out more about the entire portfolio and to engage in a conversation about the future of packaging in the pharmaceutical and life science sectors with the Körber experts.
